The video is in the works. Until then, the guide will get you there.
Step-by-step guide
Does this guide apply to my website builder?
Your provider is not on the list? Run the test. It takes ten seconds and works with any host in the world.
Open your website builder and look for two things:
- Is there a narrow bar along the left edge with small icons, one of them a gear?
- Inside it, under "General", do you find a "Tracking Code" section with a choice between HEAD and BODY?
Two times yes? Then you are in the right place, no matter what your provider calls the product.
The reason behind it: this builder is made by a single manufacturer and delivered to hosting providers around the world. Each one puts its own logo and its own colors on top and comes up with its own name. Underneath runs the same software in more than 25 languages and on every continent. So one guide is enough for all of them.
What you need for this
- Your tracking code. You get it under Tracking code with one click on "Copy".
- Access to your customer account with the provider, plus the right to edit and publish the website.
- A published website. As long as your site has never been live, nobody can be counted.
Opening your website builder
This is where the providers part ways briefly, and after that everything comes back together. Find your row:
| Provider | Country | Product name | Where to sign in |
|---|---|---|---|
| IONOS | Germany, international | Homepage-Baukasten (Homepage Builder) | Customer account, then "Websites & Shops" and "Edit website" |
| Strato | Germany | Homepage-Baukasten (Homepage Builder) | Customer login, then "Edit" |
| Hostpoint | Switzerland | Sites | Control Panel |
| Telekom | Germany | Homepage Designer | Customer center, Website Solutions area |
| iPage | USA | WebSite Creator by CM4all | Control Panel, then open the WebSite Creator |
| Netfirms | Canada | WebSite Creator by CM4all | Control Panel, then open the WebSite Creator |
| Another provider | worldwide | the provider's own name | Ask your provider how to get to the editor. From the next step on, everything is exactly the same. |
The destination is the same everywhere: the editor where you work on your website. You will recognize it by the narrow menu bar along the left edge, full of small icons.
Settings
In the narrow menu bar on the left, click the gear icon for "Settings".
A submenu unfolds. Choose "General" there.
From here on it looks the same with every provider. If your screen now matches the screenshot, you are on track.
Pasting in the tracking code
Several sections are now stacked in the main window. Scroll down to the "Tracking Code" section.
Click into the text field and paste your tracking code. It consists of a single line and looks like this:
<script defer data-domain="YOUR-DOMAIN.COM" src="https://app.trustlytics.ch/tl.js"></script>
Your own address goes in place of YOUR-DOMAIN.COM. If you grab the code with the Copy button, it is already filled in for you.
<!-- Trustlytics --> above it and <!-- End Trustlytics Code --> below it. You have to delete those two lines here. The only thing allowed to stay is the line that starts with <script.
Choosing HEAD
Right below the field, the builder asks where the code should go. Choose "HEAD".
This is the most important decision in the whole guide:
| Choice | When the code loads | For Trustlytics |
|---|---|---|
| HEAD | In the head section, before the content even appears. | Correct. Even very short visits get counted reliably. |
| BODY | Only in the middle of or at the end of the page content. | Wrong. Anyone who clicks onward or quits before that never shows up in your numbers. |
The nasty part about the wrong choice: everything looks completely normal afterward. You see visitors, the numbers seem plausible, and a chunk is missing anyway. Better to check for two seconds now than to puzzle over it later.
Saving and publishing
Now comes the part where most people get stuck. Because the save button is not where you would expect it.
In "General" there is none. And there does not need to be: the editor takes your entry on its own as soon as you leave the section. So there is nothing more for you to do there.
Saving and publishing happen somewhere else entirely:
- Leave "General".
- Switch to any page of your website. Which one does not matter.
- At the top, click "Save" first.
- Then click "Publish" at the top.
This order is mandatory. Save first, then publish. Anyone who only publishes may push the old version out the door.
Once you publish, the code is active on all pages, including the ones you create later. So you do not have to do this a second time.
Checking
Now the moment of truth, and it takes less than two minutes:
- Open your website in a new browser window.
- Click through a few pages.
- Switch to the Real-time report in Trustlytics.
- Within a few seconds, your own visit should show up there.
If something is there, everything is installed correctly. If it stays empty, the section below will help.
When nothing gets counted
Six causes cover almost every case:
| Cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| Not published | The most common case. Back into the editor, switch to any page, at the top, click "Save" first, then "Publish". |
| Published but not saved | The two belong together, and in that order. Do the round again, save first, then publish. |
| Comment lines are still in the field | Check the "Tracking Code" field. If there is a line with <!-- Trustlytics --> or <!-- End Trustlytics Code --> above or below the code, delete both. The only thing allowed to stay is the line that starts with <script. |
| Chose BODY instead of HEAD | Back to "General" and "Tracking Code". Switch to HEAD, save, and publish. |
| Only tested the preview | Open your website at its proper address in the browser, not through the editor. | Wrong address registered | The code only works on the website listed in your Trustlytics account. Check that under Website. A common trap: you entered the provider's free address, but your visitors arrive through your own domain. Or the other way around. |
Common questions
Why does one guide cover six different providers?
Because the same builder sits under the surface with all of them. One manufacturer makes the software and delivers it to hosting providers worldwide. Each one puts its logo and its colors on top and gives the product its own name. The menus, the fields, and the choice between HEAD and BODY are identical.
Do I have to paste the code into every page individually?
No. The tracking code from the general settings applies to your entire website. New pages are included automatically as soon as you publish.
What is the difference between HEAD and BODY?
HEAD loads before the page content, BODY only after. On short visits, BODY simply comes too late. So always HEAD.
I cannot find the "Tracking Code" section. What is going on?
Scroll all the way down in the "General" area, it sits below the entries for your website's name and description. If it is missing entirely, custom code is probably part of a bigger plan with your provider. A look at your contract overview will clear that up
I cannot find a save button in "General". Is that normal?
Yes. The editor picks up your entry automatically as soon as you leave the "General" area. Saving and publishing happen elsewhere. Switch to any page of your website, and at the top click "Save" first, then "Publish".
My provider offers visitor statistics of its own. Why does it show different numbers?
Because the counting works differently. Many provider statistics evaluate server logs and count search engine bots and automated requests along with everyone else. Trustlytics counts people. Your numbers with us are usually lower and closer to reality for it.
I already have another tracking code in this field. Can I use both?
Not in this field. It is built for exactly one line of code. So you have to decide which measurement runs there. And honestly, if you are using Trustlytics, you usually do not need the other code anymore.
Can I remove the code later?
Yes. Go to "General", empty the "Tracking Code" field, save, and publish. From then on, nothing is measured anymore.
Will my website get slower because of it?
No. The script is tiny and loads in the background without holding up the rest of your page.
Do my visitors need a cookie banner now?
No. Trustlytics works without cookies. Your visitors do not have to click anything away or confirm anything. If your builder already comes with a cookie banner, please do not tie our code to consent. Otherwise, you will be missing all the visitors who did not click.
